About TRIPS
TRIPS is made by 241 Software Solutions B.V. in Alkmaar and has now been around for ten years. We are a team of seven: educational advisers and developers. We build the software ourselves and coach the schools that work with it ourselves, so whoever calls gets someone who knows the school and the product.
We work for school boards and schools in primary, secondary and special education. Those schools already have their data: in the pupil monitoring system, in the pupil administration, in surveys and in Excel. What is missing is the time to bring it together and get something out of it. TRIPS connects those source systems and shows the team what is in the data, from pupil to school board.
How we work with a school
A programme starts with a data inventory at the school of about two hours: which systems are there, which questions are on people’s minds and who is going to work with it. Connecting the source systems then takes about two to three months; from two weeks after the inventory you can already access the first data. A dedicated TRIPS coach accompanies the three-month start programme and comes back afterwards for the interim and final evaluation. The whole programme, until the team works with the data independently, takes about two years.
Three principles guide how we do that. Data supports the development of education and does not determine it. The school and the teacher remain the owners of the data and of the process: the teacher chooses what feedback is collected about, when and by whom. And improving is not a project with an end date, but something a team keeps doing.
Scientific basis
Dr Joost Jansen in de Wal, researcher at the Research Institute of Child Development and Education of the University of Amsterdam, looked at the way TRIPS lets teachers work on their development. His conclusion: with TRIPS, teachers collect data about their own performance with a low threshold, and decide for themselves what about, when and by whom. That freedom matches what motivation theory says about intrinsic motivation to learn.
The visualisations of the collected data show per area of attention how a teacher is progressing. In his view, that insight contributes to a growth mindset and makes it easier to keep investing in professional development. His research focuses on motivation to learn and on the professional development of teachers.
